A Conversation Flow is nodes and edges. Each node holds a small piece of logic and a condition decides which node comes next. You get predictable paths, and you own every path you drew.

One prompt, tools it can reach for

The model gets your instructions and a list of self-documenting tools. It decides which to call and when. Ordering, where it matters, comes from a tool naming the tools that must run first.

Every branch you draw is a branch you then have to steer a caller into. Ours steered people down paths that no longer matched what they had just said, so we deleted the runtime instead of patching around it.

Being straight about it

When Retell is the better buy

Pick Retell if you need the conversation to follow a path you drew and can point to. That is usually the answer for a regulated script, or a qualification flow that has to run the same way every time. It is also the better fit if your callers are American, because Retell quotes its telephony rate for the United States and runs its infrastructure beside them.
Meddle is the better buy when your callers are Australian, when the answer to “where does this data live” has to be a place rather than a contract clause, and when you would rather write down how the agent should behave than maintain a diagram of every way a call can go.

What buyers ask

Can Retell keep Australian call data in Australia?
Not as a published option. Retell's own support forum answers the residency question by saying data processing and storage happen in United States AWS regions, and that full EU residency is not available because they do not operate services there; GDPR is handled through a DPA with standard contractual clauses instead. There is no Australian region on offer. Meddle runs its voice runtime, web application, database, file storage and content moderation in Sydney, and pins the default language model to an Australian Bedrock inference profile served from Sydney and Melbourne. Does Meddle have a flow builder like Retell's Conversation Flow?
No, and that is a decision rather than a gap. Meddle gives the model one system prompt and a flat list of tools it can reach for, and orders them by naming prerequisites rather than by drawing edges. We shipped a graph runtime once and retired it in 2026. If you want a conversation whose every transition is a condition you wrote, Retell's Conversation Flow is built for exactly that and Meddle is not.
How do the prices compare?
They are quoted in different currencies and composed differently, so read both. Retell publishes US$0.07 to US$0.31 a minute pay as you go, broken down as US$0.055 voice infrastructure, US$0.015 to US$0.040 speech synthesis, US$0.003 to US$0.16 for the language model and US$0.015 US telephony. Meddle publishes A$0.25 a minute for the default Fast model with a standard Cartesia voice, and A$0.40 a minute with a premium ElevenLabs voice. Neither charges a plan fee to start. Both figures were checked on 12 August 2026 and both vendors can change them.
What happens when the agent cannot help?
In Meddle, handing a call to a person is a tool the agent reaches for mid-call, either as a straight transfer or as a screened warm transfer that announces the caller first. With no destination configured the agent says plainly that it cannot connect them rather than pretending it will. Retell supports call transfer as well; the difference is in how you express when it happens, which is a rule in the prompt here and a node transition there.
Can I try both before choosing?
Yes, and you should. Retell gives US$10 in free credits with no commitment. Meddle mints an A$20 credit when you add a card, which lasts ninety days and draws down against metered usage. Build the same agent on both, ring each one, and read the transcripts. A voice agent is judged on a phone call rather than on a feature table, including this one.
